Setting Up for an Online Lesson
Making sure you're set up for your online lesson is very important to make sure you get the most out of your online lesson experience. Here's a few things that will help your lesson go smoothly.
A Device to have lessons on:
Ideally this device is a computer with a good sized monitor that students can see and hear me well. If a computer is not available, the next best thing would be a tablet with as large of a screen as possible. Last choice should be a phone, since the screen is so small and the sound quality might not be the best.
Internet:
You will need high speed internet. A speed of at least 10 Mbps upload and download will help prevent lag and freezing. If possible, plug your device directly into your router with an ethernet cable for the best connection. To check your internet speed put "internet speed test" in your search engine and click run.
Camera Set Up:
Please make sure I can see both you and your instrument clearly. Ideally, place your camera at eye level and far enough away so I can see both your hands, bow, and posture. You also want to make sure you are facing the camera so I can see you best. Here are examples below of how to sit for your lesson.

Headphones:
Headphones are very important so we don't get any extra feedback and helps eliminate echo and lets you hear more detail in the sound. Wired headphones are best, sometimes Bluetooth or wireless can create a delay in sound.
Lighting:
Make sure the room you are in is well lit. No fancy lighting necessary, just make sure I can see you.
Music:
Having some kind of stand to hold your music up so you can face your camera is so important. Often a music stand isn't quite the right fit. One thing I've found helpful is a cook book holder that you can prop up on a desk. Students should also have a pencil close by for note taking and a notebook to take any extra notes about the lesson.
Ideally students should also be standing during their lesson. But if that is not possible, they should have a chair that does not have arms.
