What to Expect at Your First Lesson
"Let music belong to everyone." ~ Zoltan Kodaly
Introduction:
Whether it's been on your mind for a while, or you decided on a whim to start learning a new instrument it's a big step! Congratulations!! The first lesson is an exciting step, and can often come with some nerves and anxiety. This is all normal. My goal is to make it as comfortable and enjoyable for you as possible. Here's a peak at what to expect during your first visit to my studio.
1. Learning in a home setting
Welcome to my home! Whether you are joining me online, or coming to my home directly my lessons are held in a private sunny studio in the back of my house. Parents are always welcomed to sit in on lessons, and in the summer our sunny deck is a great space for parents to wait while still being able to listen in on the lesson. I want students to feel comfortable right from the start, because learning should be a joyful experience.
2. Getting to know you
Your first lesson won't be all scales and exercises (don't worry!). Instead we'll spend some time chatting so I can learn more about you. I'll ask about your musical background, what inspired you to pick up the violin or viola, and what your musical goals are. Whether you're hoping of playing in local orchestra, fiddling at folk festivals, or just having fun. I'll also share some of my experiences and how I feel I can help you reach these goals.
3. Assessing your starting point
If you're brand new to the violin or viola, we'll start from square one. My first goal of your first lesson will be to learn how to hold your instrument, and make some sounds. If you've played before, we'll do a quick assessment to see where you're at. I might ask you to play something you've learned or demonstrate a few skill. Don't stress -- it's not a test! It's just a way for me to tailor your lessons to meet your unique needs.
4. Wrapping it up!
Before you go, we'll chat about scheduling and any materials you might need, like shoulder rest recommendations, method books or extra strings. I'm always here to answer questions, no matter how small.
5. What you should bring
Your instrument and bow. If you haven't obtained one yet, let's discuss the best options for you whether you're looking to purchase or rent. Your instrument should be obtained prior to your first lesson. I am happy to help you, so please don't feel you need to get one on your own.
Any music, or method books you have used in the past. Bring these to your lesson so I can assess what you already know.
A pencil and a notebook. Taking clear notes is always so helpful. I also take notes during your lesson and will email you my own lesson notes.
6. Resources
There are a few online resources that I often use to help students. Please feel free to bookmark and refer to them as often as you need.
As always, if you have any questions about starting violin or viola lessons please send me an email at [email protected]
I'm looking forward to meeting you!
